Happy Halloween

For months now, Caitlyn's been pulling her panda costume out of the drawer it lives in and begging Mommy to help her put it on. We weren't so sure though that she'd really like the trick or treating. Would she be scared? Turns out we didn't need to worry. We teamed up with some neighbors, and as soon as Caitlyn saw the older kids come back from the first door with candy in their hands, it was all over. She'd run up to each door. (well as long as Mom was with her), and then run back down the driveways to show Dad what she got. She even remembered to say "Happy Alloween" at least sometimes.

Halloween 2009

It's funny that with all the candy she brought home, she was initially most excited by the pretzels. That didn't last too long though after we let her try a 3 Musketeers. Looks like we're raising a serious chocoholic.

Caitlyn Khoo is Two!

Last month, Caitlyn had a small but sweet birthday party with immediate family. All month long, we've been asking her if she wanted chocolate or vanilla cupcakes and she was consistent (and insistent) in her answers -- chocolate was the hands down winner. So chocolate it was -- I made a rich chocolate cupcake and topped it off with a chocolate frosting.

Jaety and I were singing Happy Birthday to her for a couple weeks prior just so she wouldn't be surprised (and freaked out) by the chorus of Happy Birthdays on the actual day. She seemed to enjoy being sung to and she still actually sings the Happy Birthday song to this day. (She hasn't fully understood that everyday isn't her birthday.) To top it off, when we ask her "how old are you" she'll proudly answer TWO! (Though, at times, she'll also answer with the word "panda" since we were also practicing "What are you going to be for Halloween?")

Play-Doh Rintoo

Not to brag or anything, but Jaety and I are awfully proud of our play-doh work of art. For those of you who don't know this rambunctious 5-year old tiger, his name is Rintoo and he's a character in one of Caitlyn's favorite programs. On the left, is our version (ignore the body). It's pretty close to his actual likeness, right?
Too bad, Play-doh Rintoo only lasted for a couple of minutes before Caitlyn tore into him. Literally.

Nature Center -- Sept '09

These pictures are a few months old but as the saying goes, "better late than never." We took advantage of a warm day in September and decided to take a walk at the New Canaan Nature Center. There was a new chicken coop/house there which is why Caitlyn was particularly curious by the new inhabitants.

Rock Star

Uncle Peter and Alex were kind enough to loan us their Rock Band game and it's surprisingly a time sucker. Caitlyn is not the only one in the family to enjoy playing this game :)

Much to Uncle Peter's delight, Caitlyn can now refer to him as "Pee-tah" instead of "Pee-pee." I would have been okay with either version.

Fall in Glastonbury

A few weeks ago, Caitlyn and I visited Aunt Jackie and Uncle Matt up in Glastonbury for an eventful weekend full of apple picking and fall festivals.

The 70-minute drive up there was scenic, the apples were crisp, and the apple cider donuts were piping hot and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Yum! Oh, and to top it off, Caitlyn and I got to pet and hold some cute and fluffy baby chicks (unfortunately no pics of that -- needed both hands.)

Of course Caitlyn loves snakes....

It's one of her mom's biggest fears.

These pictures were taken at Earthplace, a nearby nature discovery center. There's a room filled with animals -- guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, owls, parakeets, but oh no, she just went to the slithering reptiles. Caitlyn also loves saying "sssssssss".

Still playing catch-up

Here's a link to pics from May-July. It includes some activities from Mother's Day (gardening), a family vacation to Rhode Island and a visit to Aunt Jackie and Uncle Matt up in Glastonbury, CT.

Playing catch-up

Back in early May, yes May, Jaety and I decided to take Caitlyn on an impromptu trip to the Bridgeport Zoo. It was a sunny morning (one of a few so far this Summer) and the zoo was pretty quiet (in terms of pedestrian traffic not animal noises.) We had a great time with the highlight being an up-close look at prairie dogs (see pics) and a tiger who wouldn't stop roaring. I'm sure it didn't help that we all kept on staring at him/her.

The zoo was not huge but definitely very manageable for a toddler to walk around the exhibits safely. Hopefully, we'll be back again before the Summer is over.

Spirited Caitlyn

This 25 second video of her does an amazing job at capturing Caitlyn's personality and gives you a glimpse of her highly "spirited" nature. She makes funny noises, runs around (yes, in dizzying circles at times) and shrieks with delight (though the shriek of detest sounds very similar.) Caitlyn's arm flapping is also what she does when she's throwing a temper tantrum.

On a related note...apologies to any New Canaan parents looking for toddler parenting books at the library. We swiped them all including "Temper Tantrums" and "Parenting a Strong Willed Child."

Happy Easter!

Here's just a few pictures from this past Easter. We "went" to church in the morning (ended up just hanging out in the hall for most of the mass since it was ridiculously crowded....amazingly, Caitlyn was actually content just sitting quietly and playing with her Easter basket for most of the time), then headed up to brunch with Nana and Gramps Edwards as well as some extended family.

Many thanks to Tricia and Laura Kapp for loaning us the beautiful Easter attire. Caitlyn (and her mommy) are very lucky to have friends with such exquisite taste.

Some random pics...yes, Caitlyn loves her shoes but not necessarily on her feet. Sometimes, she'll don her shoes on her hands and pretend she's walking around on her hands.

She's loves playing with our spin around pantry. I turned around for one moment and somehow, she had managed to open the package and got ahold of some vanilla cookies.

Visit from the Godfather

A few weekends ago, Caitlyn's Godfather, Geordie, his wife, Julie, and their daughter, Sophie, made the trek out to the 'burbs to spend some time with us. Not only did the grown-ups have a great evening out, but the two toddlers also got to spend some quality time with each other. (Sophie is 10 days older than Caitlyn.) Here is a picture of Caitlyn and Sophie taking a bath (I'm sure we'll hear from the two girls about this picture in about 15-20 years, if not sooner.)

Caitlyn's new preoccupation....crawling through our coffee table. She used to be scared of doing so (I think she found it claustrophobic) but for some reason, she tried it today and now loves it.

Caitlyn Walks the Catwalk

Yes, we've been bad bloggers. Many apologies for the lack of posts. Caitlyn has been a handful but we're enjoying life with a toddler. Perhaps this is a girl thing or a toddler thing, but she has a LOVE of shoes. I can't take off my shoes for a second without her swiping them off somewhere to put them on. As the video shows, she has even tried on her first pair of high heels and gets around quite well in them if I do say so myself.

She is also really letting us know her mind (i.e. what she wants) and has her "Yesses" and "Nos" down. (See the video below taken during lunch time.) She has also fully initiated herself into toddlerhood by getting her first black eye at the playground. She barely even cried and wanted to get right back into the action. Excuse the runny nose as well in the video -- she has been fighting a nasty cold.

Happy 2009!

Sorry we missed the month of November on the blog updates. It’s been a busy end of the year. The big event in November was our trek up to Fenwick for the traditional Edwards (extended) family Thanksgiving. It was sort of small this year. Don’t think there were more than 70 relatives. Caitlyn slid through the legs of the crowd with ease, unlike Mom and Dad as we tried desperately to chase after her! Luckily Caitlyn was healthy for Thanksgiving, which was kind of amazing seeing as she only managed about 5 days total in November without some kind of cold. We were all a lot healthier in December, although Caitlyn had a rough time in the middle when she got 5 new teeth in the span of 10 days. She’s been a much happier baby in the first week of 2009 now that she’s getting a bit of a teething breather.

Caitlyn was a lot more involved in her second Christmas than the first. Somehow she learned the phrase “Christmas Tree” and all December all you had to do was say the words and she’d run right to it. Speaking of words, while she only says a handful ("Mama", "Dada", "Up", "Dis", "Dat"), it’s clear that she understands a whole lot of what we say. She’ll bring us toys by name. She points to the bird feeder when you say “Where are the birds?” She’ll touch her ears, teeth, head and hair on command. And of course, you can’t say “Jack’s Big Music Show” without her immediately running over to the drawer where we keep the remote, pulling it out, and pointing it at the T.V.

She’s also getting much more openly affectionate. All of her stuffed animals get frequent hugs, and occasionally Mom and Dad do too! She likes to sit in our laps now, although she has a very unorthodox approach: A while back, we taught her to sit in her toddler chair by turning around and backing up into the seat. She’s really good at it now, but she’s discovered she really really likes backing up. When she comes to sit in our laps, she’ll start backing up from about 6 feet away! She also likes to dance with us. She follows along with the lyrics of this one song, stomping her feet, spinning around, and bouncing up and down on cue.

She's also getting very adept at running...running away from putting on her jacket and diaper changes that is.

It’s really amazing how fast she’s learning new things now. Sometimes we look at her and for a moment she looks more like a little girl than a baby. It’s hard to imagine everything she’ll have learned before we welcome in 2010! But we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

From Jaety, Geraldine and Caitlyn, Happy New Year!
